Mission

The mission of the helpline is to alleviate feelings of despair, isolation, distress, and suicidal feelings, to provide an effective and reliable service for those experiencing emotional crises, and to promote general mental health. Kaan Pete Roi accomplishes this through confidential, compassionate, and open-minded listening on the helpline and through ongoing workshops, events, research, and collaborations with organizations.

Objectives

1. To promote awareness that suicide is a public health problem that is preventable
2. To develop broad-based support for suicide prevention
3. To develop and implement strategies to reduce the stigma associated with using mental health, substance abuse and suicide prevention services
4. To develop and implement community-based suicide prevention programs
5. To promote efforts to reduce access to lethal means and methods of self-harm
6. To increase access to and community linkages with mental health and substance abuse services
7. To improve reporting and portrayals of suicidal behavior, mental illness and substance abuse in the entertainment and news media
8. To promote and support research on suicide and suicide prevention
9. To select and train volunteer citizen groups
10. To promote mental resilience through optimism and connectedness.
11. To outreach and education about suicide, including risk factors, warning signs and the availability of help.
